Bees are like tiny superheroes with wings! They flit from flower to flower collecting nectar, which they turn into yummy honey.
But that’s not all! Bees are also super pollinators. When they visit flowers, they carry pollen from one plant to another, helping them grow fruits and vegetables we love to eat!
Don’t forget the international bee day – May 20th
Why Are Bees Important?
Imagine a world without bees! We wouldn’t have many of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts we enjoy. Bees help pollinate about one-third of the food we eat!
How Can We Help Bees?
We can all be BEE-lieve it or not! Here are some ways we can help our fuzzy friends
- Plant bee-friendly flowers: Choose colorful flowers that are rich in nectar, such as sunflowers, lavender, sage, mint, ivy, coriander, petunias, thyme, oregano, rosemary, savory, catmint, borage, and more.
- Avoid using pesticides: Pesticides can harm bees and other beneficial insects. Try natural pest control methods instead, such as sticky traps or soap and water solutions.
- Build a bee hotel for solitary bees: Solitary bees are important pollinators, but they need a safe place to sleep. You can build a simple bee hotel out of a wooden box with small holes, or purchase a pre-made bee hotel from a nature store.
